This is the before picture of
one of the 3 porch columns. The
crown molding was rotten and
the boards under the
column were failing.

I tore off the moldings, stripped
and sanded the column. (hours
and hours of work, 80+
years of paint.) I created a new
base for the column to sit on.
This is the finished column
with new crown moldings. Just
needs the paint cleaned off the
bricks around the base.

Here is a full view of the
restored column.

The sides of the inside of the
porch was painted white. The bottom
was heavily weathered so I stripped
the whole side.

Underneath was beautiful
beadboard so I decided not to
paint it but finish it with garnet
dewaxed shellac. I sanded
the weathered areas and used
a dentil pick to get in the
grooves. (not fun)

Picture on left:  I stained the wood before
adding the shellac and it turned
out darker than I wanted. I
still have several panels to do
so I will strip this back down when I begin doing the rest and get
the correct color.
Then I'll lightly sand and
finish with a spar varnish.

Update:

I ended up not using a stain or spar varnish on the beadboard.  I used several layers of dewaxed garnet shellac.  It has held up in the humid summers and the snow in the winters now for about 4 years.  It is a covered porch but is exposed to the elements.  It doesn't get much sun, though.

FRONT PORCH FLOOR

I also heat stripped the large board
on top of the rails and painted it
with latex. I still have to heat strip
the floor and repair some bad
boards. If the wood looks nice
I'll stain and finish it instead of painting it.

I'll probably stencil a
trompe l'oeil rug where the
porch furniture will go someday.
